Madeleine & Jonas: On the Rocks?

Expressen writer Johan T. Lindwall wrote recently that Princess Madeleine of Sweden and her fiancé, Jonas Bergström, have been experiencing a rocky patch in their relationship — one that has actually been going on since before their engagement last summer.

Lindwall writes that the “deep crisis” in their relationship “began in the spring,” when Madeleine became concerned that career-oriented Jonas was too focused on his work as a lawyer and was not making their relationship a priority.  His proposal in Italy in June was, then, a huge surprise for Madeleine — and that Jonas had been motivated to ask for her hand when he “realized he was about to lose his great love.”

But Lindwall believes that the engagement has not solved all of their problems.  He writes that their romance was “really shaky” during the autumn months of 2009 and that Madeleine “questioned their relationship,” even going so far as to consider postponing their wedding.

The official date for Madeleine and Jonas’s wedding has yet to be announced, and the Swedish royals have not commented on the Expressen story.  If there’s an element of truth to it, let’s hope that Madeleine and Jonas work out their differences before they walk down the aisle!

I doubt this is true– these tabloid writers are running out of ideas because the relationships of their royals are so perfect! (Except Carl Philip’s, but he doesn’t count :-) )

  2. Annie says:

Oh my, if it is indeed true, well…they’ve got time to push out their wedding if need be since no date has been announced. Better to determine this now than after the nuptials.

I don’t know anyone who didn’t have a ‘rough patch’ during their engagement. Frankly, I wanted to throw my now-husband off a cliff many times at that point! :)

Well I’ve heard that the Expressen is quite a reliable source of information for Swedish Royal news, although tabolids can never be trusted 100%.

That is shocking if true about Madeline & Jonas. I never expected trouble there. I hope they can work it out or at least put on the breaks before they walk down the aisle if it’s not working. This is the problem IMO of having a person in a high powered job & dating a royal. It rarely works IMO. Something has to give. People who give Kate Middleton a hard time, take note.

Madeleine said the story wasn’t true, through her press secretary. You can look up the quotes in Aftonbladet.

Jj – none of the Swedish tabloids are very reliable sources when it comes to unconfirmed rumors, and Expressen has been wrong about plenty of things in the past.

Thanks for the info, cc — that’s good to hear! :)
