Pierre & Beatrice: Summer Smooches

Pierre Casiraghi and girlfriend Beatrice Borromeo kiss on the beach (21 Jul 2009)

The Monegasque royals continued their sunny summer holidays last week, boating and sunbathing on the beach.  Here’s Pierre Casiraghi and his Italian girlfriend, Beatrice Borromeo, sneaking a kiss seaside.

And they may have had to be really sneaky with this smooch, because they weren’t alone on this vacation.  Instead, they were accompanied by Pierre’s mother, Princess Caroline, and his younger sister, Princess Alexandra of Hanover.  Even the family pooch was along for the fun!

After all, the family that sunbathes together, stays together, right? ;)

Willem-Alexander & Máxima: Argentine Adventures

Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima in Argentina (July 2009)

The crown prince and princess of The Netherlands, Willem-Alexander and Máxima, are taking advantage of the winter months in her native country of Argentina — they’ve brought the whole family for a ski holiday!

The couple and their three daughters, Princesses Catharina-Amalia, Alexia, and Ariane, are spending ten days with the Zorreguieta family in Patagonia.  Photographers snapped them out and about this week skiing and enjoying the outdoors (in bright orange helmets, no less).

And they apparently enjoy their visits.  Hello! magazine reports that the family may be spending even more time in South America soon: “Enamoured of the breathtaking scenery in the area just near the Chilean border, the royals bought a $3.5-million ranch there a few years ago.  Set in tranquil countryside on the banks of River Pichi Leufu, the estate is an ideal spot for fishing and kayaking.”

Royal Wedding: Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer (1981)

TRH The Prince and Princess of Wales on their wedding day (29 Jul 1981)

Today is the 28th anniversary of the most famous (and infamous) royal wedding of our time: the nuptials of HRH The Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and The Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.  The two were wed on the morning of July 29, 1981.  Their wedding was dubbed a fairytale at the time, even though we have since learned that there were far more human problems under the regal surface.

Since 1981, the world watched as the pair welcomed two sons before later separating and divorcing in 1996.  A year later, Diana died in a car accident in Paris.  Charles married his long-time mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles, in 2005 — she can be seen in the video of the 1981 wedding.  Today we’re waiting to hear when Charles and Diana’s eldest son, William, will announce a royal wedding of his own.

But though we all know how the story ended, why don’t we take some time to transport ourselves back to the hope and fun of 1981, when this royal romance seemed to trump all others?  You can watch the entire wedding on YouTube — here’s a playlist of all of the parts, including pre-wedding interviews, coverage of the public response, the complete wedding ceremony, the carriage ride back to Buckingham Palace, and the couple’s departure for their honeymoon.  Enjoy!

Felipe & Letizia: Remembering in Romania

The Princes of Asturias sign a book of remembrance in Bucharest, Romania (27 Jul 2009)

Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia are in Romania this week on an official visit.  One of their first scheduled engagements on the trip was a visit to the tomb of an unknown soldier, where they lay a wreath and signed a book of remembrance.

Their visit will also include an official dinner, meetings with government leaders and businesspeople, and a tour of a medieval exhibition and a monastic community.

William & Kate: Ring Games?

Kate Middleton and Prince William's private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, at the Beaufort Polo Club (18 Jul 2009)

Clive Goodman at the Daily Star writes that Kate Middleton displayed some intriguing ring behavior during the recent Chakravarty Cup at the Beaufort Polo Club.

He explains, “First, William’s girl showed up for the match at Beaufort Polo Club, Gloucestershire, sporting two sparklers next to each other on the second and third fingers of her right hand. But minutes later the playful princess-to-be had slipped one of the rings on to the second finger of her left hand.”

One of Goodman’s unnamed sources speculates, “It was a very strange thing to do and everyone was wondering what she meant and if she was trying to tell us all something about her and William.”

It would be great to hear that William and Kate had definitely made it official, but something tells me that Kate, so famous for her discretion when it comes to the details of her romance, wouldn’t risk revealing an engagement before the appointed time.

Until we see her on the lawn with a gigantic sparkler on her left hand, I think we’ll all have to keep speculating! :)
