William & Kate: A Royal Wedding in Rocky Economic Times?

Buried in the text of the News of the World’s exclusive revelation of a break up between Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy was another quiet sign that a wedding is indeed on the cards for Prince William and his own longtime girlfriend, Kate Middleton.
While some news outlets have used the split between Harry and Chelsy as another forum to prophesy doom for William and Kate’s relationship, Robert Jobson and Ryan Sabey instead suggest in their piece that the pair may indeed be headed down the aisle — albeit under reduced circumstances.
With Britain and the rest of the world in the grips of a recession, even The Queen herself is feeling the strain of the beleaguered economy, as she has been denied funding to make basic repairs to the structures of royal residences. HM has also reportedly told her grandchildren to avoid the paparazzi-ridden nightclubs of London lest they seem out of touch with the plight of the common citizen. So it should come as no surprise that she apparently wants William and Kate to tone down the royal pomp and circumstance should they marry soon.
Jobson and Sabey’s palace source explains, “The Queen knows how the nation is really suffering. A big lavish ceremony would send out all the wrong messages.” Perhaps the long carriage ride from St. Paul’s Cathedral down the Strand and the Mall to Buckingham Palace, with its excellent views for tourists but extensive security costs, is not to be for William and his future princess.
